The good old days of the Showa era, alive and well.
Cafe Hinode TEXT/YUSUKE TOKOSHIMA, PHOTO/NAOKO TAKAHASHIPlastic display cases still hold food samples, faded but proudly displayed, symbolizing the classic junkissa (traditional Japanese coffee shop). Cafe Hinode sits in the basement of the Hinode Building, which towers right in the heart of Odori along the street leading to the station. It was founded in 1971 — the year before the Winter Olympics, when the opening of the subway and a rush of building construction brought major development to the city of Sapporo. Directly connected to the Odori station exit, this shop still shows the same bustle today as it did when it opened.
The interior has barely been touched since opening. Lamps, skylight-style light fixtures, and heavy antique furnishings all carry an air of elegance, evoking the good old Showa atmosphere. The customers are wonderfully varied — businessmen taking a break, cheerful young couples, older groups deep in conversation about daily life. Owner Tozawa, who took over the shop from the previous owner, says that with the spread of mobile phones, the shop has shifted from being a meeting spot to a place people visit to spend time alone. She's gently adapted with the times, reducing box seating in favor of tables for two.
The dark-roast original blend coffee has been made lighter than it was at opening, to suit changing tastes. The beloved spaghetti meat sauce has kept exactly the same flavor and appearance since day one — thick noodles paired with a rich, slightly sweet sauce, served with salad and soda water for 900 yen as a set. The 700-yen chocolate parfait, piled high with fresh cream, is the flavor of a special-occasion treat from the past. Staff who quietly gauge the right moment to take an order, refill water without disturbing the room's relaxed pace — subtle hospitality that feels wonderfully comfortable. Today too, this gentle, nostalgic space welcomes you in.
