Watching over the neighborhood for half a century — Susukino's mom and pop.
Hachiya TEXT/KAGEHIRO WATANABE, PHOTO/SHUN TAKEBENot a trendy menu, but gentle, comforting flavors. Always open, always a relief to step into. Hachiya, on the first floor of the Dai-Ichi Green Building just steps from Susukino subway station, is that kind of place. It opened in 1968. Back then the building was the finest in the area — but somewhere along the way it became the oldest, and Hachiya became the longest-standing tenant within it. The shop’s location hasn’t changed since opening day, and the counter and register stand are the very same ones from back then. The drawers, worn smooth from decades of hands opening and closing them, carry nearly half a century of history.
A couple who came from the countryside has run this shop together ever since, and they're happy to lend an ear when needed — truly ‘Susukino's mom and pop.’ The shop has nothing but a counter, so conversation naturally flows across it, helped along by the shop's warm atmosphere. For customers who, like the couple, came to the city from elsewhere, the old-fashioned flavors here taste like home cooking — perhaps one reason this place has remained so beloved. The shop's name, incidentally, carries a wish for it to become a gathering place buzzing with people like a beehive, and even the lampshades are said to be designed to evoke honeycomb.
No alcohol here. Open into the late night, it's the perfect spot for a final bite after drinking. Mackerel simmered in miso for seven hours, an old-fashioned sweet curry rice made with wheat flour, and ochazuke with a well-seasoned dashi broth — all gentle on the stomach and palate after a night of drinking. Takeout is available too, and the most popular item is, true to its name, the ‘Simmered Egg Onigiri,’ packed with a whole soft-simmered egg. The rice itself has a secret seasoning, making it delicious even eaten cold. Whether you need a nightcap bite after drinking or a little something before you start, this is the place to go.
