Always seven craft beers on tap.
Kalahana TEXT/KAGEHIRO WATANABE, PHOTO/HIROFUMI TATSUKIKalahana, named after the Japanese word for hops, is a specialty bar for craft beer and cider. There are always 8 taps flowing — 7 craft beers and 1 cider. The Belgian beer “Vedett Extra White” is a fixed menu item, while the other 7 change almost daily. Beers come from a wide range of origins, including Japan, the US, and Europe, with the bar actively seeking out rare labels. Some taps even pour beers of which only a few kegs exist in all of Japan.
One of the things this shop cares about is ‘beer with a face behind it.’ Manager Mr. Sasaki, a self-described beer geek, sources beer as much as possible directly from breweries he has personally visited. Another priority is creating a ‘homey atmosphere.’ The goal is to be the kind of countryside beer café where neighbors gather and chat leisurely. Kalahana is particular about the quality of its beer, yet completely free of stiffness — and perhaps that relaxed beer-café spirit is exactly what lives on in its character.
This shop uses beer in its food menu too. The ‘Beer-Braised Pork’ is a hearty dish of pork braised until it's soft enough to cut with a spoon, served over garlic rice. The ‘Beer Curry’ is made using beer instead of water, simmered for as long as four days — which means production can't keep up with demand, and it's actually rare to find a day when it's available.
Here you can drink beer while eating food made with beer. It's a shop made by beer lovers, for beer lovers. Whether you're a die-hard craft beer fan or just mildly curious about beer, we highly recommend stopping by at least once.
