A Hokkaido Heritage site of red brick, still carrying the scent of the Meiji era.
Sapporo Beer Museum TEXT/KAGEHIRO WATANABE, PHOTO/SHUN TAKEBEThe star that appears on Sapporo’s city emblem. This five-pointed “Star of the North” star, rooted in the era of Hokkaido’s colonization, can also be seen on Meiji-era buildings still standing today — the former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick Government Office), the former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall (Clock Tower), Hoheikan, and Seikatei. The Sapporo Beer Museum is one of these too. It’s Japan’s only beer museum, and a Meiji-era historic building designated as part of the Hokkaido Heritage site “Sapporo Naebo District Factory and Memorial Hall Cluster.”
About 2km from Sapporo Station, on the former site of the Kaitakushi Beer Brewery, sits Sapporo Garden Park. Within this site, alongside Sapporo Beer Garden, stands the red-brick Sapporo Beer Museum. Near the entrance, barrels are stacked bearing, read from the top right downward, the phrase "Mugi to hoppu wo seisureba biiru to iu sake ni naru" ("Refine malt and hops, and you get the drink called beer"). This is said to recreate the original signage from when the brewery first opened in Meiji 9 (1876).
The museum traces the history from the Kaitakushi Beer Brewery through to Sapporo Breweries Ltd., introduces Kiyotaka Kuroda, who was involved in the brewery's opening as Deputy Director of the Kaitakushi, and displays factory models along with beer bottles and posters from the mid-20th century. You can also see the roughly 6m-diameter, 10m-tall kettle once used to boil the wort. Wander freely at your own pace, or join a guided tour to learn more in depth. There's also a tasting salon where you can sample freshly made beer, including "Kaitakushi Beer" and the Hokkaido-exclusive "Classic." Why not spend a day off experiencing Sapporo's history through your eyes and your taste buds?
The Sapporo Beer Museum will be closed for renovation from Friday, February 12, 2016, through mid-April. For details, please see the link below.
