The deep flavor of a stone warehouse and mizunashi curry.

Behind Sapporo Station, an old stone warehouse. Preserving the character of its 100-year history, it opened as a cafe bar in 2010. People now come here to meet up, satisfy their appetite, or search for new ideas. Owner Ota once worked in Paraguay as a care and welfare specialist. “ROGA” means “home” in the local Guarani language. This space, it turns out, was originally the warehouse of Ota’s own family business, “Toyo Camera House” — a neighborhood photo shop beloved by the community for more than 50 years, until it closed in 2013. The old cash register and iron kettle that had been sitting dormant in the stone warehouse, alongside a wood stove Ota purchased new because he simply had to have one, all carry real presence in the calm space.

ROGA's signature curry rice is a "mizunashi" (waterless) curry, made using only the moisture naturally released by the ingredients. Plenty of onions are sautéed, then simmered for two full days. The additive-free roux has a light consistency, with a faint tomato acidity giving way to a pleasant, tingling spiciness — and at the same time, the chicken practically falls apart in your mouth. Refreshing yet deep, it's the kind of curry your spoon just keeps moving through. The macaroni salad that comes with the lunch set pairs surprisingly perfectly with the curry rice. And once the roux has been simmered down further, thickening as the moisture evaporates, it becomes curry doria. Originally served only as a staff meal, it was such a hit once added to the party menu that it's now one of the most popular evening dishes.

Ota's goal is to "create a living bulletin board." In an age overflowing with information online, the desire to build a space where people can connect directly was the whole motivation behind opening this shop. That's reflected in its diverse programming — photo exhibitions, live music, talk events, all-night ROGA sessions, and more — making it an appealing venue for turning ideas into reality. And of course, as a cafe bar near the station, it's equally satisfying just as a place to eat, with a generous menu spanning meals, snacks, desserts, and drinks. A space as comfortable as home, and a curry rice with a flavor all its own — inside this old, nostalgic stone warehouse lives a fresh, stimulating sensibility.
