Art completed by nature and the passage of time.

Red foxes and squirrels occasionally wander through too, exploring with obvious curiosity. The Sapporo Art Park Outdoor Art Museum scatters its works across a sprawling 7.5-hectare forest. Fresh spring greenery, autumn foliage, and snow-covered scenery form an ever-changing backdrop across the seasons. The sculptors themselves visited this site in person, taking in the terrain, the distinctive northern climate, the angle of the sun, and the rustle of the wind before beginning their work.

The sculptures on display comprise 74 works by 64 artists from Japan and abroad, representing contemporary art. Five works by the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, active in the early 20th century, are on display — the only place outside his home country where his works can be seen together as a collection. The series by Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan took seven years to complete, spanning a full 300 meters, a scale only possible at Art Park.

After walking around outdoors, if you start to feel a chill, head to the indoor museum, which hosts elaborate special exhibitions. On the grounds, you'll also find the "Former Arishima Takeo Residence," notable for its vivid red exterior walls and window lattices, and the "Chuichi Sato Memorial Children's Studio," dedicated to a sculptor who devoted himself to children's art education. The Children's Studio regularly holds workshops that parents and kids can enjoy together. With a restaurant and cafe on the grounds too, you can immerse yourself in art all day, taking breaks along the way. Not just in autumn, the season traditionally associated with art — winter, spring, and summer are just as inviting. At Art Park, works that live alongside the ever-shifting passage of time and nature await, revealing new expressions each time you visit.
