Where the everyday meets art.
Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art (Winter) TEXT/YUSUKE TOKOSHIMA, PHOTO/NAOKO TAKAHASHIThe Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, located almost in the very center of Sapporo. Affectionately nicknamed “Kinbi.” Since opening in 1977, the museum has built up its collection with a focus on both Hokkaido’s regional character and international scope, and now holds a substantial number of modern and contemporary works from Japan and abroad.
The building, with its cool white exterior and striking angled roof, was designed largely by Minoru Ota, a city planner and architect who spent many years teaching at Hokkaido University. The first-floor hall opens all the way to the ceiling, and natural light pouring in through the large openings creates shifting shadows inside. The interior, kept in a monochrome palette, has a somewhat cool, minimalist first impression. But look a little closer, and you'll notice careful design touches everywhere — a variety of tile patterns, earth-toned stonework, and more. The space as a whole seems to bring out the best in the exhibited works, quietly enhancing the lingering impression they leave behind.
The permanent collection is especially strong in works by Hokkaido-connected artists, but the museum is also well regarded for its collection of domestic and international glass art and paintings from the École de Paris. The permanent exhibition, "Collection Gallery," presents these valuable holdings through carefully curated themes. Special exhibitions bring outstanding works from Japan and abroad to Hokkaido, depending on the theme. It's a curious feeling — paintings you once saw in a textbook, sculptures that once felt distant, suddenly right in front of you, as if you're in dialogue with the work itself. That instinctive pull, even without fully understanding why, might be the real pleasure of visiting a museum.
The museum also hosts gallery tours led by volunteer guides, and gallery talks where curators lecture on the exhibits. Most sessions welcome individual visitors without advance reservation, and are popular for offering a deeper look at the works. During summer break, programs like orienteering and art-making workshops for kids are planned too, offering something parents and children can enjoy together. The museum also offers a comfortable children's room, a nursing area, and accessible restrooms, among other amenities — all part of careful attention paid to making art approachable for visitors of every generation, without pressure.
Whether you settle on a favorite piece and take your time with it, or drop in on a sudden free afternoon, the Museum of Modern Art, a bit removed from the bustle of downtown, seems to offer a lesson in engaging freely with art on a deeper level. In winter, when spending time outdoors can feel like a chore, why not take a small art excursion to a space like this instead?
