Even while working at a general corporation, she watched her parents back home working to make the land around their farm and the paths between the rice paddies more beautiful, planting flowers along the way. Around that time, she came across an advertisement for a gardening training program in England on a subway car card ad. A long-held dream of studying abroad, and her feelings for her parents — the two came together, and she made up her mind to study gardening. She quit her job and traveled to England alone. After returning to Japan, she immediately began building a garden with her parents on the family farm, but what awaited her there was—
This is our “Tsuwamon” interview with Sayuki Ueno, now a leading figure in Hokkaido gardening.
Viewing the garden from different angles and perspectives is one of the joys of visiting. "Please take the time to look closely, even at the small flowers underfoot," says Ueno. The garden blooms with flowers of every size, color, and variety, each growing freely in its own way.
Visiting during peak bloom is wonderful, of course, but one defining feature of Ueno Farm is how the flowers in bloom shift with the seasons, from spring through autumn. Even a single month's difference can completely change the garden's atmosphere. "I hope people will visit during different seasons and meet the flowers of that particular time," she told us.
Sayuki Ueno
Gardener, Ueno Farm. Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. After graduating university, worked at an apparel company in Sapporo. Later studied gardening in England. After returning to Japan, began building a garden on the family farm. Has overseen garden designs across Japan, including the garden featured in Yoshimasa Kuramoto's 2008 television drama "Kaze no Garden" ("Garden of Wind").
