Care and warmth, in every cup and every plate.
Coffee & Lunch SOIREE TEXT/YUSUKE TOKOSHIMA, PHOTO/NAOKO TAKAHASHIBlue and pink neon tubes glimmer quietly out front. Three minutes on foot from Kita-24-jo station on the Tozai subway line, tucked into a residential block, sits Coffee & Lunch SOIREE. Owner Waniguchi, known for his gentle smile, runs the homey shop together with his wife and her older sister. Marking its 34th year in business, the interior feels nowhere near its age — bright and full of a fresh, clean feeling.
"Foot traffic around here has really dropped off," Waniguchi says, a note of sadness in his voice. When the shop opened, the area was lined with markets and shops, and the flow of people never stopped. Even the ward office nearby, once a source of many regulars, shortened its lunch break, accelerating the decline in customers. Even so, he says there are commitments from opening day he simply won't compromise on: avoiding ready-made and frozen ingredients wherever possible. Dressings and sauces are all made in-house. To get fresh, quality ingredients, he personally goes out and buys everything himself. The flavor and the care behind it are the shop's pride.
The classic blend coffee combines six different beans. While many shops serve ready-made, vegetable-oil-based coffee creamer, here it's made in-house from milk and fresh cream. The lunch set — napolitan spaghetti, thick-cut toast, and salad — comes with coffee included. The vegetable-packed hot sandwich also comes with salad and coffee, a warm and nostalgic flavor. There's a daily lunch special too, with a recipe devised by Waniguchi's wife so it never gets old even if eaten every day. A deep affection for offering good food and a relaxing space shows through in every corner. This is the kind of shop that makes you want to open the door and say, "I'm home."
