Dive into the world's oceans, in Shin-Sapporo.

The only aquarium in landlocked Sapporo opened in 1982. It’s a compact facility, but it houses and displays an impressive array of life — roughly 200 species and about 10,000 specimens, including saltwater fish, freshwater fish, and crustaceans. One of its defining features is how it recreates a broad range of the world’s oceans — from the seas near Hokkaido, to coral-reef-filled southern waters, to the Amazon River, letting visitors journey through the world’s seas and rivers and meet the fish that live there. Being indoors, of course, means you can visit year-round, rain or shine.

At the touching pool, kids can actually reach in and touch starfish and crabs by hand, and it's always a lively spot. There's no shortage of events and special programs to keep things fresh — a "feeding show" with around 1,500 fish in the ground-floor circular tank, a "fish circus show" featuring striped beakfish performing in four special tanks, "night watching" sessions, and a "crab fishing experience." In 2013, the circular tank was renewed, making the movement of the fish and their schools feel even more dynamic.

Alongside crowd favorites like the clione, clownfish, and ribbon eel, an astonishing variety of marine creatures are on display — rays, moray eels, piranhas, arapaima, Dolly Varden trout, and more. Each species' own beautiful, dance-like swimming style, or the way they hide themselves in aquatic plants or sandy bottoms — you'll find yourself stopping at each tank, thoroughly absorbed. On the 2nd floor, marine mammals like spotted seals and Asian small-clawed otters, along with rockhopper and Humboldt penguins, entertain visitors with their charming movements.

The gift shop, "MARINE SHOP," carries stationery, mascots, and finely detailed figurines featuring fish motifs — the kind of goods that really appeal to true aquarium enthusiasts. Plenty of visitors reportedly pick some up as souvenirs. The colorful fish drifting through the dimly lit space are, at times, downright dreamlike. Right in front of Shin-Sapporo Station, the world's oceans await.
