One design, one piece only. Natural stone jewelry.
“space1-15,” a creative space for distinctive artists and shops, sits right by Sapporo’s streetcar stop “Nishi 15-chome.” Jewelry artist Keiko Muro’s shop-and-studio, “Snow blossoms,” occupies its 4th floor. Muro honed her craft in Tokyo at “Beads Balance,” run by costume jewelry designer Yoko Shimizu, before going independent as Snow blossoms in 2005, when she relocated to Hokkaido after marriage. She’s had her studio at its current location since 2010.
Inside the shop, jewelry built primarily around natural stones sits alongside antiques — aquamarine, labradorite, blue moonstone, green opal, amethyst, lepidolite, and more. Not as costly as fine gemstones, yet still refined enough to wear on formal occasions. Unlike glass beads, which can feel almost toy-like, these carry a real depth of shine. The uneven colors and shapes, even the natural inclusions, are all part of what makes natural stone so rich in character. Muro continues to create one-of-a-kind jewelry, studying the individual "expression" of every single stone and weighing the overall balance as she works.
Some of Snow blossoms' jewelry also uses freshwater pearls. Among the wide variety of shapes and colors freshwater pearls come in, Muro chooses only ones in soft, muted tones. The same holds true for natural stones — every piece of jewelry in the shop carries a gentle, warm color palette.
Snow blossoms bracelets are designed to make the movement of your hand look beautiful. Move your wrist, and they catch the light, or, worn doubled up, create a soft rustling sound. Earrings range from casual to formal, with longer designs built for elegance and shorter ones for a more understated look.
Some necklaces are designed to be glimpsed subtly at the collar; others are designed to be the centerpiece you build an entire outfit around. You can choose pieces to match each season's styling.
What Muro pays especially close attention to when designing is making sure each piece is "beautiful worn, not just beautiful displayed." Something too decorative might look great on its own, but it can end up clashing with an outfit. So she avoids overworking each piece, leaving a bit of breathing room. Why not choose your own piece of natural stone jewelry, one that makes getting dressed a little more fun and fits your own personal style?
